The Heart Behind Builders of Hope
For more than 15 years, the Cocalico Builders of Hope program has helped local families experiencing housing instability take the next step toward a brighter future.

Through transitional housing, mentorship, and financial coaching, families are given the tools, support, and encouragement they need to build lasting stability.
Now, after relying on rental homes and relocating four different times as landlords’ plans and priorities changed, the program is working toward something it has never had before: a permanent home.
Helping lead that effort is Kendra Shuman, a volunteer budget coach who has faithfully served families for more than 12 years.
With a background in accounting and decades of living on a budget herself, Kendra understands the value of having a financial plan. Years ago, someone took the time to teach her basic budgeting skills, and she says that simple act had a lasting impact on her own life. Today, she’s paying that gift forward.
For Kendra, this work has never been about spreadsheets or numbers.“Even when it’s difficult and people are challenging, I stay involved because it’s a calling.”
She believes her role as a budget coach is simply one of the ways she can use the gifts she’s been given to serve others. Over the years, she’s learned that families don’t just need financial education. They need someone who believes in them.
While budgeting and financial coaching are important, Kendra has found that relationships are what truly make the difference. Families are encouraged every week, celebrated when they reach milestones, and reminded they aren’t walking the journey alone.
For Kendra, Builders of Hope is about far more than providing temporary housing. It’s about treating families with dignity, helping them set goals, and walking beside them every step of the way. Those relationships create lasting change that extends well beyond a family’s time in the program.
Today, Kendra is spearheading much of the fundraising effort to purchase a permanent home for the Cocalico Builders of Hope program. Since the program began, it has relied on rental properties and, through no fault of its own, has had to relocate four different times as properties became unavailable.
“We believe now is the right time to get our own permanent house so that we are no longer at the mercy of a landlord.”

A permanent home would provide stability for the program and the families it serves, allowing more local families to find hope and a fresh start right here in the Cocalico community. For Kendra, the need couldn’t be clearer.
“I believe in helping families one at a time to truly change their life. Permanently.”
Will you help make that vision a reality? Your generosity will help ensure the Cocalico Builders of Hope program can continue serving local families for generations to come.
